Where it all started
2 Minute Read
It all started with the desire to create something while making a difference. I started Mama Eco two years ago with the goal of making a living doing what I loved.
In the first iteration, I made wooden planters out of reclaimed wood, which I sourced locally in New York. I figured I could take something that was viewed as waste, and give it new life, all while using my creative juices to design beautiful objects that people would love just as much as I loved making them. I have always been passionate about working with my hands and have not found anything that is quite as rewarding as creating something out of nothing.
I hit a learning curve last year when I realized that the only way to make a business like that work (and to actually support myself on it) was to mass-produce the planters, which sucked all of the life out of me and sucked all of the fun out of it. What I loved about making the planters was the creative aspect of it, and making 100 of the same thing just didn’t do it for me.
Then, I decided to take things in a new direction. I quit my full time job (and the benefits that came with it) and I started my blog at the end of last year. I haven’t looked back since.
The blog allows me to connect with people and give them solid, easy solutions to sustainable living without the judgment, without the guilt, and without much effort. And the website gives people a resource to find eco-friendly alternatives to products that they use and buy everyday.
This new path has allowed me to extend my reach and have a much bigger impact on the planet because its not just focused on one thing (reclaimed planters), but instead is focused on empowering people to make their own changes, in a way that is palatable for them and in a way that can have REAL impact.
It all started here, and I can see now that I’m just getting started 😉
Great story! I’m excited about the work you’re doing and even more excited for what’s to come!
Thank you so much!
